Challenging Trekking 📍 Kanchenjunga

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

The far-eastern giant - Nepal's wildest long trek

🗓 20 days 🏔 5,143m 👥 Max 10

Overview

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek takes you to the base of the world's third-highest mountain, Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), in the far north-eastern corner of Nepal. This is one of the most remote and wildest long treks in Nepal, taking 20 days and visiting both the north and south base camps of the mountain.

Starting with a flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur and a long jeep drive to Taplejung, the trek climbs through Limbu and Rai villages, dense subtropical forest and eventually above the tree line into the high alpine valleys of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. You will visit both Pangpema (5,143 m) - the north base camp - and Yalung Barun (4,500 m) - the south base camp - with the traverse over the Sinion La and Mirgin La passes.

The trek is rated Challenging because of its length, the high passes and the basic accommodation - a mix of teahouses and camping. This is a true wilderness experience for trekkers who have already done the popular routes and want something wilder and more remote.

Frequently asked questions

How remote is the Kanchenjunga trek?

Very remote. The Kanchenjunga region sees only a few hundred trekkers per year, compared to tens of thousands in the Everest and Annapurna regions. There is no mobile phone signal in much of the region, no ATMs beyond Taplejung, and limited teahouse accommodation in the upper valleys - we use a mix of teahouses and fully-supported camping.

What wildlife can I see in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area?

The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area is one of the most biodiverse protected areas in Nepal, home to snow leopard, red panda, Himalayan black bear, blue sheep, musk deer and over 250 species of birds. Snow leopard sightings are rare but possible, especially in winter. Red pandas are occasionally spotted in the bamboo forests below Ghunsa.

Why does the trek visit both base camps?

Kanchenjunga has two main base camps - Pangpema on the north side and Yalung Barun on the south side - each offering completely different views of the mountain. Visiting both gives you a complete circuit of Kanchenjunga and the chance to see both the dramatic north face and the immense south face. The traverse between the two over the Sinion La and Mirgin La passes is one of the great high-altitude walks in Nepal.
